Ruined but not beyond saving. I was in this house last year and it is a gem. Unfortunately the property was sold for development in 2005 and nothing has happened…

The irish should have done what the French did, throw the undertakers out and the State acquired ownership .instead the Irish burned most of the houses down when the owners were still living there how sad

How sad altogether
Lake View, the original name, stands between Midleton and Ballinacurra in the townland of Castleredmond, just south of the Lakeview Roundabout on the N25. I recall the house when it was inhabited and the family then in possession kept it in excellent condition. Lake View was built in 1829/1830 by Mr Swithin Fleming. In 1830, a friend of Daniel O’Connell, Fleming registered the trees he had planted in the grounds, indicating the completion of the house. Many of these trees were lost when the road to Whitegate was widened by Cork County Council in the late 1950s, early 1960. The house is, of course, a (very) late Georgian gentleman’s suburban villa. Its present condition is, of course, depressing but it has been acquired by new owners and there are hopes for improvement in the condition of the house.
I discovered this week when visiting the area that Swithin is in our family line. He owned the family Murphy’s pub at 10 Mill Road in Midleton, we’re my grandfather, Edmund Fleming lived with his family until he came to the US in 1928.
