Above are the stone gate piers at the entrance to Kilmacroom, County Cork. Below are the gate piers at the entrance to Hazelwood, which lies a mile or so away from the first property, both being houses owned by members of the Lysaght family. Seemingly, the two lions once stood guard on either side of the entrance to another Lysaght property in this part of the country called Mount North (since demolished), but they were then lost in a game of poker to the Longfields of Longueville, who later installed them at another of their estates, Waterloo. The lions were subsequently retrieved by the Lysaghts but being undecided which of their houses they should adorn, a compromise was reached by placing one lion on the pier of each entrance, with obelisks crowning the other side.
